REKAOFELA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION is a non profit organization providing development programmes for out of school youth in Sebokeng and neighboring townships. It was established in 2008, by two young community members (MR Ben Ntoloane and MR Moeketsi Monkhe) it was started after an intensive consultation and research with various stakeholders, such as business, NGO’s, FBO’s and individuals. Our decision to establish the youth development centre was informed by the study conducted and it came to our attention that the social ills that persist within our communities could be addressed if we have a vehicle such as youth development centre.
The Rekaofela youth development organization is there to render accessible, relevant and progressive services to the youth of Sebokeng and the surrounding townships. The Rekaofela Youth Development Organization mobilize and organize the youth of Sebokeng and the surrounding areas to actively take part in skills development programmes that will be beneficial to the youth and community at large. The Rekaofela also aims to engage the community of Sebokeng on issues such as school drop outs, Drug Abuse, Teenage Pregnancy, HIV/Aids and Crime Prevention.
To date Rekaofela has established partnerships with local NGO’s and general community stakeholders. Our goal is to foster commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills and re-assert a sense of hope in the future of young people. Rekaofela is a program is a direct response to the growing number of young people that are either falling through the cracks at school or are already entangled with high rate of unemployment. The ultimate goal of the programme is to identify youth who are going to have turbulent transition to adulthood and offer positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail their lives.
The youth of Sebokeng often find themselves battling the issue of poverty and high rate unemployment, a condition that often gives impetus to other socio economic problems such as high rate of school dropouts, early teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and crime. It is because of such factors that the community finds itself plunging even deeper into poverty. For an average youth growing up in Sebokeng the situation might be enough to justify apathy or cause frustration.
Many of the youth in the Sebokeng area find it difficult to believe in themselves enough to make an effort to succeed in life and this make the challenge to develop the area even difficult and the Rekaofela team believes there is light at the end of the tunnel, after all the initiative is driven by youth that comes from the very same impoverished background.
