FOUR PAWS South Africa was established in 2006 and is a registered Section 21 not for profit organization and a PBO. During the first few years of its inception the focus was on LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, situated 18 kilometers outside of Bethlehem in the Freestate. As an organization, FOUR PAWS South Africa wants to now spread its wings and become one of the most well-known Animal Welfare Organisations in the country.
FOUR PAWS South Africa is part of FOUR PAWS (VIER PFOTEN), an international animal welfare organisation with headquarters in Vienna, Austria, and offices in 11 other countries. Founded by Heli Dungler in 1988, the organisation strives for improvements in animal welfare through sustainable campaigns and projects. FOUR PAWS focuses on animals that are directly under human influence, for example stray dogs and stray cats, farm animals, wild animals and companion animals kept in inappropriate housing. FOUR PAWS aims to help animals in need directly and quickly.
The vision of FOUR PAWS South Africa is a world without animal suffering, a world where humans treat animals with respect, empathy and understanding. This is illustrated in our current focus - the banning of canned lion hunting. Our overall mission is to reduce animal suffering which will be accomplsiehd by being the strong, global and independent voice for animals under human control, creating sustainable solutions for animals in need, changing the behaviour of humans, driving legal change, and building powerful partnerships. With our three-pronged approach of emergency response and disaster relief for animals both big and small, wild and tame; as well as our educational programmes and mobile animal clinic.
